From the Bottler:
The liquid is a limited batch blend from one of the best emerging distilleries in the world, Gray’s in Mauritius, and the world-renowned Barbadian distillery Foursquare. Molasses based, Equiano is rich and deep flavours from the ex-Cognac and ex-Bourbon casks that it tropically matures in. 10 year old French Limousin Oak and ex-Cognac casks from Africa. Married with 8 year old American Oak casks and ex-Bourbon casks from the Caribbean. Mix of column and artisanal copper pot still in the production, pot still gives the rum greater complexity and depth of flavour and is truly an artisanal small batch process. Whilst the column still allows the final blend to have a superior balance both in aroma and on the palate.
Foursquare won the coveted 'Supreme Spirit Award' beating all other categories, in recognition of their unquestionable quality and respected as one of the best spirits producers in the world.
Gray’s grow and harvest all their own sugarcane, when milling the 'Green Gold', bagasse is obtained as a waste product and the company use this biofuel to power around 1/5 of the island's electricity.
Nose: Rich notes of dried fruits such as raisins and sultanas combined with sweet toffee, butterscotch and caramel culminating with a suggestion of orange peel, vanilla and buttered wood.
Palate: Equiano delivers all the natural sweet notes of a well-aged rum from American white oak ex-bourbon casks. It has a warm toffee and butterscotch mouth-feel, with chewy raisins and brown sugar flavours that emerge from the liquid as it caresses your tongue.
Finish: Although Equiano is a naturally sweet rum, it has a medium to sweet ending with touches of oak, anise, sweet pepper with a hint of bitter orange peel.
