54.3% ABV
A single cask bottling from Islay's legendary closed distillery, Port Ellen. Distilled in March 1983, in its final year of production and bottled in March 2019 from sherry hogshead #13101.
XOP – Xtra Old Particular is Douglas Laing’s flagship label. It is only bottled at natural cask strength, uncoloured, and in this case the colour emanates from a Sherry Hogshead. The brand is reserved for what the company consider the Laing “family jewels"
From Douglas Laing:
"Douglas Laing & Co are happy, for a myriad of personal reasons, to help with the Scotch Whisky Industry’s Beatson Cancer Charity auction by offering probably our favourite Single Cask Single Malt bottling – Port Ellen 35 years old, fully matured in a sherry hogshead under our XOP, Xtra Old Particular label.
Bottle number 76 of 128 was hand filled from a distillation that took place back in March 1983, and was bottled at a natural strength of 54.3% vol, in March 2019. The nose shows a wonderful smoked quality alongside burnt brown sugar and cured meats. The palate is full of mocha, BBQ character and stewed fruit, whilst the finish runs long with rich spices, treacle and peat."
